Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Every NJ cemetery maintains its own rules for headstone inscriptions. Letter height limits, permissible fonts, allowable symbols, and required surface finishes vary by facility and by section. Inscription Guide contacts each cemetery's administrative office before any inscription is designed, confirms the current regulations, and incorporates them into the proof drawing the family reviews. This step is standard in our process because it is essential — an inscription that doesn't meet the cemetery's standards requires costly rework.

Foundation Requirements

When a new stone is installed or an existing stone is temporarily removed for workshop inscription and then reinstalled, the foundation must meet the cemetery's structural and dimensional requirements. Inscription Guide manages all foundation work as part of the installation, building reinforced concrete bases sized to support each stone through New Jersey's seasonal ground movement. Properly built foundations keep headstones level and secure for generations.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-based cemeteries throughout New Jersey often carry inscription guidelines tied to denominational tradition. Jewish cemeteries frequently restrict figurative imagery and may require specific stone orientations. Catholic grounds may specify cross proportions. Eastern Orthodox cemeteries have their own standards. Inscription Guide's long experience with these communities — Jewish cemeteries in Bergen and Essex, Catholic grounds in Morris and Union, Orthodox facilities in Passaic County — means we can advise families on inscription designs that satisfy both personal intention and denominational requirement.

Our Headstone Inscription Services

Headstone Inscription

A headstone inscription begins with text: the name or names, the dates, and whatever words the family chooses to place between. An epitaph, a scripture verse, a line of poetry, a profession of faith — these choices matter deeply, and the process of arriving at them deserves unhurried attention. Inscription Guide's consultants do not rush the text conversation. Once the words are established and verified for spelling and date accuracy, the lettering style is selected. Roman serif is the most common across New Jersey cemeteries — its proportions are traditional, its legibility strong. Old English and Gothic scripts carry a more ceremonial weight. Custom lettering — calligraphic, hand-lettered, or matched to a specific typeface the family has seen — is available when something beyond the standard library is needed. Cyrillic characters for Russian and Polish inscriptions are produced at our Morris County workshop as part of regular practice. Engraving method is determined by the stone and the design. Sandblast engraving produces deep, clean letterforms suited to granite memorials and built to last. Hand-chiseling is applied for decorative elements, relief borders, and any dimensional work that accompanies the text. For companion stone additions — a date-of-passing or second name added after a spouse's passing — Inscription Guide performs the inscription either at the workshop or directly on-site at the NJ cemetery with portable equipment, matched to the original lettering style.

Unspecified Options

Headstone inscription accompanies a range of additional services: portrait etching from a family photograph, decorative border work, religious and military symbol engraving, and cleaning or restoration of older inscriptions that have faded with time. Restoration work — clearing biological growth, re-cutting worn letterforms, re-gilding painted text — is assessed case by case, with the least invasive method recommended before any treatment begins. Cleaning and restoration is available for stones at cemeteries throughout New Jersey.

Custom Design Process

The Inscription Guide inscription process begins and ends with family approval. The consultation establishes the text, lettering style, and any additional elements. A scaled proof drawing is produced showing every component of the inscription in its final position. The family reviews and approves this proof before production begins — and no production begins until that approval is received. Installation at the NJ cemetery is coordinated by Inscription Guide, covering all permit and scheduling requirements.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is text review: the consultant and family work through the proposed inscription word by word, checking spelling, confirming dates, and discussing the placement of each element. A transposed digit in a birth year or a misspelled middle name is the kind of error we catch before any tool is picked up. Step two is lettering selection: the family chooses a font from our reference library, or brings an example of a lettering style they want matched. Step three is the proof drawing, a scaled rendering showing every letter, symbol, and border element in its exact final position on the stone surface. The family approves this proof in writing before production begins. Step four is layout transfer: the approved proof is stenciled precisely onto the stone at our Morris County workshop, or, for on-site work, at the cemetery itself. Step five is the inscription: sandblast engraving for lettering; hand-chiseling for relief and ornamental elements. Step six is cleaning and final inspection: carved channels are cleared, letter depths verified against the proof, and the finished inscription reviewed under variable lighting before the stone is released.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“The inscription included a verse in Polish that my grandmother chose before she passed. Inscription Guide got every character right and placed it exactly as we discussed in the proof. Seeing it in stone — in her language — was deeply meaningful to our family.” — Helena, Passaic County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a services?

Date-of-passing additions and second-name inscriptions on existing headstones typically take two to four weeks. New memorial inscriptions, including those with portrait etching or decorative elements, generally require six to eight weeks from consultation to cemetery installation. We provide a timeline at the start of every project.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. Inscription Guide provides headstone inscription services at cemeteries in all 14 New Jersey counties. We coordinate directly with cemetery offices on permits and scheduling, so families do not need to manage those steps themselves.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Every inscription is designed to meet the specific regulations of the cemetery where it will be placed. We contact the cemetery office during the design phase to confirm the applicable rules and incorporate them into the proof before the family reviews it.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Families regularly bring photographs, handwritten text, printed poetry, and design references. Portrait photo-etching — transferring an image onto polished granite — is offered alongside standard inscription work. We advise on the achievable detail level based on the source material you provide.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Veterans' inscriptions can include branch emblems, service periods, rank, and decoration citations. We are familiar with the VA government-furnished marker program and can help families who qualify for that benefit understand the application process.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
